2004 Scion xB

by 2004Scion-xB on 09-16-2015
1st Gen Jem
I traded an 08 Mazda 3 GT for my 04 xB in April 2012 and haven't looked back. I love my xB - the original box on wheels. I've had my eyes on the xB since they were first released in the US in 2004, and they never made it to Canada as they dropped the xB for 07 and then came back with the second gen in 08, still not coming to Canada until 2011. Having driven both the 1st gen and the 2nd gen, my personal preference has always been towards the first gen, and if you can find one in good condition with low mileage for a good price, they are well worth the money, and carry the Toyota dependability and reliability. I have a little over 110K miles on it at the time of this writing, and in the 3 and a half years I've had it, I haven't had to do anything major other than oil changes and front pads and rotors which I got after market for $110 CAD for both rotors and ceramic pads. Tons of room, custom modification possibilities are endless. All in all, a fun, practical little box to drive on a daily basis. Love my xB!!

VERY spacious for a small car. LOTS of head and leg room
Unless you have sat in a Scion xB then you will never know how big the inside of this micro van really is. Small engine and Toyota reliability make for an economic family mover.

Mixed Bags
- Fuel Economy suffers as Automatics are only 4 spd. 9.9L/100km in Winters and 8.8L/100km in summers

-Interior build quality is very low grade. Very plastic and constant warping/creaking noise from pillars. Been to the dealer multiple times, no remedy

-90 degree hood makes it prone to chips and scratches, get 3M on the front of hood deflector

-If you're a tall individual you may experience knee pain as the centre console blocks your knee from resting comfortably.

-Awkward usb/aux port

-Stock bluetooth system is horrendous.

Some Pros.

- So far no major malfunctions,

- Very large cargo space

Tons of Headspace an EXTREMELY reliable!!
Awesome car and great for just about anyone! I am 6'9" and I have headroom!! It drives great and handles like a dream in the winter because of the proper weight distribution! It is a Toyota and that is what makes it so reliable!

Fun and functional
The reason why I'm selling this car is because I am moving cities. I really enjoyed driving this car as it is very reliable, spacious and really functional. I use this car mainly for city driving, transporting friend and sometimes packing it up with some sporting/camping gear to go outside and play. I am going to miss this car.

Toaster from Toyota
Mileage driven 60k

Pro: No repair or breakdown since 2011 , only regular fluid changes needed. Roomy , drives just like a car , plenty of power to haul 5 adults with gears , priced right.

Con: No back up camera , No side mirror camera , No forward recording camera , No lane drift assist , No radar collision warning systems , No tires pressure monitoring systems , No DVD playback , No digital radio , No GPS , No leather wrap anything , No regular dealership waiting lounge coffee .

But other than that , it is a solid tank like vehicle from Toyota.

Most reliable car I've ever owned
I wouldn't be selling this car if I didn't need an SUV or truck to pull a horse trailer. It is by far the most mechanically reliable car I have ever owned. I have never had any major issues with it and I've owned it since new (2006). The harsh East coast roads can be hard on the body cosmetics but this car will go through almost anything even with all season tires. If you want a car that is going to last, this is it!

Scion Really Got It Right with the xB!
I was searching for the ideal car for 2 years before I decided that the xB was everything I was looking for. One test drive and I was a proud owner an hour later.

The xB fit all of my criteria. I was looking for a very affordable and reliable car with lots of character. When I'm in this, drivers take notice. It's very comfortable, fuel efficient and has more than enough leg room in the back. It has many conveniently functional features such as stereo control on the steering wheel, blue tooth connection so I can drive and talk hands-free and a USB port in the storage cubby under the arm rest.

There are 2 cup holders, plus extra storage in the door for bigger bottles and I especially love the drop-in pocket on the left side dash where I can just quickly drop my sunglasses, phone and wallet before entering the vehicle and avoid them flying around on the dash when turning corners. There's a convenient shelf under the glove box where passengers can store their wallets, phones, etc.

The height is ideal as I don't have to uncomfortably drop into the car which usually causes my jacket to snag on the seat fabric on the way down, causing my bare back to expose to a cold seat in the winter. I don't have to climb up or even pull myself up to get out. From a standing position, the seat is readily available for me to park myself and just swing my legs in.

The best part is that Scion made this vehicle affordably attainable enough for someone like me, on a tight budget.

Fun and easy car to drive
Typical Toyota, reliable and dependable. I like the styling of the XB and that you sit up and can see the road so well. Drop the back seats down and you can get a big load of "stuff" in there. Christmas tree, no problem, dresser, night table and hutch from IKEA, no problem. The 2.4 engine is paired up with a great transmission that gives the XB a lot of pep. On the highway, pass anything anywhere!

Great Car!
We've had the car for a year now and it's been great. Sporty, peppy and fun to drive. Lots of head room and comfortable to drive. It serves a family of four with ease.

2012 Scion xB

More than it appears
The Scion is not the best we have owned in any area BUT it is very good at everything making it a much better car than the specifications would suggest.

The interior is clean and comfortable for both short and long drives. The ride is excellent for the wheelbase and although it could use more sound dampening the wind noise at highway speed is very low.

The stock stereo comes with 4 x ~5.5 inch speaker and 2 tweeters. The head unit is used in all of the Scions and I can not tell you how bad it sounds until you choose the right vehicle in the settings. The manual says nothing about this. Once I told the stereo it was in an XB, not an SC, it sounded a 1000% better.

The handling is well balanced and the 2.4 engine feels much more powerful than the 150 hp would suggest. The car pulls well though the gears and sounds very good doing it.

The gas mileage is pretty average although it would probably be better if the engine didn't sound as good under throttle.

Storage capacity is slightly above average.

The towing capacity is equivalent to a Big Wheel. Scion does not suggest you install a trailer hitch although the mounting brackets are factory stock and it took me less than 1/2 hour to install a hitch laying on my back in the driveway.

All in all we like it and we will likely buy the lease out if it continues to operate like we expect it will. And there is the final thing about it. It is a Toyota. We expect that like our last few Toyota's it will have a higher resale value than the amount owed when the lease came to an end.
